OWOP day 4
This dress has a story...
Check out our beautiful wedding gifts - rose plant, sundial and potted trees (in the background!) |
So, anyway, when this challenge came up, I knew I needed to use some orange! I had just enough of the orange flowery fabric for the bodice, and just enough of the creamy stuff for the skirt. Bingo! I got cutting. The skirt fabric was a dream. It practically velcroed where I wanted it, so I cheated and didn't use any pins at all (saved me minutes - worth it!). The orange is just a reasonably solid cotton/polyester, so I left it unlined.
First layer made, I started to hold it up to myself and noticed that a)the top fabric is a bit too harsh for my girly English skin, and b) you could see my pants through the skirt. So, quick trip to the haberdashery for some lining. I've never lined a skirt before, so that was a challenge!
Tried it on a second time, with the lining attached. Curses! It makes my boobs look flat! So open it all out again... think about unpicking the darts... Nope, decided I couldn't be bothered and left it. Can you tell I have flat boobs? I think it's barely noticeable.
Put it back together again. Realised that it needs a coloured hem to give it some oomph. Poor Mr M was roped in this time to pop over to the haberdashery after work to get some bias binding! Then I sewed it on back to front. Could this go any worse?!
And finally, I needed to sew the lining all back down around the stupid zip (which took 3 tries to put in!). But enough is enough, so I wore it all day without the lining sewed down! Obviously no one noticed, but I knew. So I won't be doing that again. I felt such shame at my incomplete dress that I rushed home from work, quickly took this pic and got into PJs! Fully attached linings for me in the future, thank you very much.
I now need to plan some lessons, mark some homework and finish my outfit tomorrow - it's my most exciting idea yet (I think!).
Emily.
